STAFF ROLES

I will talk about the main staff roles

- Enshutsu (episode director) Enshutsu (episode director) is the person in charge of the direction of the episode in terms of cinematography. Their role is to mainting a consistency in the action, by supervising the intentions of every cut. They would for example edit the emotion of a character, fix the perspective of a shot to make it feel different, change the action of a character to make it more clear, adjust the timing or durations of the cuts...etc The Enshutsu usually works using blue sheets. (The different supervisors use colored sheets for their corrections (see "anatomy of a cut")) As an example, I will show these Enshutsu corrections made by Hosokawa-san on Yaiba (Hosokawa-san is particularly careful about the cinematography and perspective. But every enshutsu can have different approach to this work!) It happens that the Enshutsu is also the person that made the storyboard for their episode, but it is not always the case. - Sakkan (animation supervisor) The Sakkan is the animation supervisor. The japanese is "sakuga kantoku" (sakuga director) I personally prefer to use the work supervisor over 'director' because I think their role is more about supervising than directing the animation The role of Sakkan is to improve the quality of the animator's drawings, in order to mainting the consistency and visual quality of the animation. They usually work using yellow sheets. Their work consists in drawing over the animators drawings and fix them. They will also follow the indications of the Enshutsu that comes before them. These corrections will then be used by the animator to draw the genga. It's very important to note that every cut pass by many hands! What you see on the final image has imput from Enshutsu and Sakkan, and sometimes Kantoku as well. Also, the layout might sometimes be drawn by someone else than the animator - Seisaku (production supervisor) The Seisaku (production) staff are an essential part of the production of anime. Their role is to organize everything for the artists to work in the best conditions, among other tasks such as recruiting new animators. In wit studio, the Seisaku staff(wip)
